I completely agree! AITF was the pinnacle of all entertainment!

From the quality of the writing to the warmth of the characters to it's ability to continually make one laugh heartily to it's endless watchability...it is just the best and nothing will ever come close to it, much less surpass it.

I can not BELOEVE that this show is so good that I have been watching it continually since it's debut in 1971 when I was 9 years old.....down to today, when I repeatedly watch it on DVD. No other show can bear that kind of viewing and the scrutiny it entail.

Amazing!

And the funny thing is, as a staunch conservative, I find the real-life attitudes and views of the actors and producers very objectionable and offensive...and yet they managed to make a show that I love!

Even other shows that I love, such as The Honeymooners and The Odd Couple and Seinfeld, can not hold a candle to AITF nor can they be watch continually like AITF.

Ed, that's interesting that this episode caused a lot of women to come forward about their rape assaults. If that is true, then it was worth it, I suppose. It's interesting because in the episode about Gloria being attacked, she didn't come forward, and that might have taught women viewers the wrong lesson, so this update of the issue with Edith might have made up for the mistake. But it was also quite odd that it was Gloria who was pressuring Edith into going to the police, considering that in the earlier episode she didn't do so herself. It would have been more hard-hitting if she had told Edith that she made a mistake by not going to the police when it happened to her.

I also heard that the story line for the Edith episode was originally intended for One Day at a Time, but for some reason Norman Lear used it on All in the Family.

Well so would I feel that way, but why was their first attempt at this topic a failure in that regard? Or rather, why did they feel it was? I thought Struthers played it quite well. I thought she acted the role very well of a shattered, emotionally suffering, near victim. I thought they dealt with the whole issue of failing to come forward and it's resultant affect on her quite well.

I guess I just don't see why it was necessary to do a repeat on it.

I have to chime in on this one. After reading your posts, I have to agree that this is one of my least favorite episodes. I understand All in the Family was trying to deal with relevant topics in that time period, but don't find it amusing to watch.

On the contrary, I've heard this episode did a lot for the womens movement. I read an article that this episode actually convinced many women to come forward about their personal attacks. For this, I'm glad the episode promoted change in the world.

Hi there,
I believe the episode you're referring to is named MIKE AND GLORIA'S HOUSEGUESTS. It's on DVD 6.

After Archie baptized Joey without Mike/Gloria's approval he is forced to sleep in the kitchen when the Bunker's house had a broken furnace. In this episode, he refers to the cockroach.

Hope this helps!
Regards,
Ed Taylor

Well, that's because that was their agenda. They weren't on a quest to accurately portray the two ideologies in an unbiased fashion. Their agenda was clear, it was to make fun of Archie and those who thought like him.

There were precious few exemptions from this.

Yes, I agree with you Dunsel. I'm not sure if it was Carroll O'Connor's doing, or something else.

Another thing that was missing from All in the Family, in my opinion, was a rational conservative voice. There were times when Gloria and the Meathead's liberalism would be exposed as the focal point of silliness, while Archie's point of view was once in a while--but very rarely--treated as understandable, albeit still laughable. This making fun of the political Left also was what the spinoff "Maude" was all about, too, but those moments were still rare in the All of the Family universe. Not a single normal, non-bigoted voice of conservatism ever made its way until that universe, until the very short-lived 90's era spinoff, 704 Hauser, was on for six weeks, through the "Goody" character, who was "named after Thurgood Marshall but ends up Clarence Thomas." The only character who somewhat represented conservatism at all on All in the Family was Edith, who is depicted not as a rational mouthpiece for tradition and small government, but as a pushover wife who knows about nothing other than tending to the needs of her husband and children, and in this episode has the conservative steadiness of her life revealed as too naive and innocent for her own good. On her 50th birthday, she is still unaware of the realities of the world outside her small circle.

I think Adam raises a relevant question, what exactly was their intention with this episode?

In my opinion, as Carroll O'connor (as much as I love him as an actor) got more control, the show's began to reek of an agenda, his agenda. I've heard him speak in interviews on Entertainment Network, wherein he said he had a passion to tell a particular type of story. I don't mean this specific story, I mean relevant ones in general.

The problem was, although he was a brilliant actor, he was not a brilliant writer. When you watch art, while you should get the message the artist is trying to get across, you shouldn't be overly conscious of the fact that they're trying to get it across.

You shouldn't smell the agenda. You shouldn't feel like somebody is trying to sell you something, cram something down your throat. The message should be a byproduct of the story, not the reverse. That's the way I feel about this episode, it's as though they said "let's do something powerful, meaningful, striking. Let's be deep.". Whenever you do that, you invariably fail.
