As much as I loved the Lorenzo characters, and would have liked to continue seeing them, I don't think even a spin-off of them would have worked.

AITF was unique, in that it wasn't just your average formulaic sit-com; and the premises on which it was built were grounded in reality....which is a very hard thing to do with a weekly TV show- and none of Lear's other shows were able to achieve that feat.

The Jeffersons are a good example of what I'm talking about. While I loved their characters on AITF, IMO, their own show did not work (even though it was commercially successful). Ditto Maude, or any of the other AITF spin-offs.

It's a rare thing to have a show like AITF; one that actually works; isn't hackneyed and cliche and which has the perfect mix of humor, warmth and realism to be both believable and entertaining. No matter how good a character may be, when you take him/her out of the "world" that they came from, and impose on them another scenario, it just isn't the same.

Heck, they couldn't really even keep AITF up to the high level of standards which it once achieved- I mean, look how lousy season 9 was.......
IMO, anytime they break out of a show's "world" by having them interact with real-life people/celebrities or characters from other shows.....they are crossing a line that shouldn't be crossed; a line that ruins the illusion and starts to become storybook territory.

You make some good points! Thanks for responding! I totally agree with what you said above. I have seen this done many times on various shows (interacting with real people) and it NEVER works!

Nah....would not have worked; would have been too phony. AITF was more realistic; S&S was more cartoonish- and regardless, it just would have sullied AITF to have put it in such an artificial "TV world" situation- kind of like it did in Edith Writes A Song, where the black burglar characters were so contrived and unrealistic that i can't even watch that episode (See? They DID meet Lamont!)-The two shows were just in different universes.

Also, I don't know why it is that everyone considers the Sammy Davis episode to be so funny. While it wasn't the worst episode, it certainly wasn't one of the better ones. IMO, anytime they break out of a show's "world" by having them interact with real-life people/celebrities or characters from other shows.....they are crossing a line that shouldn't be crossed; a line that ruins the illusion and starts to become storybook territory. They destroy the integrity of the show, and ruin the illusion of the characters being real people- which, IMO, seriously degrades any show...especially a good show, with believable characters.

Now Sanford and The Jeffersons (after the Jeffersons got their own show)...that could have worked....because both shows were just comedies...for comedy's sake- and I don't think anyone would take them seriously- whereas AITF was also a comedy...but a more realistic one, that was set in the real world, and believable as such. The Jeffersons and Sanford were essentially set in make-believe TV-land (Even though they were ostensibly set in NYC and Watts- you knew their locales bore no resemblance to the real places of the same names)

I think that this idea had the potential to be a classic! Possibly one of the funniest AITF episodes of all time, even surpassing the Sammy Davis Jr episode. But unfortunately we will never know because it never happened. At least I don't think it did. Who knows if this idea ever crossed the minds of the AITF writers, but I think they could have really taken the ball and ran with it if it did!

Fred and Lamont Sanford fly out to NY (for whatever reason) and SOMEHOW Michael meets and befriends Lamont. Long story short.........Michael brings Lamont and Fred over to the Bunker household and they all end up having dinner together. The possibilities are endless! Imagine Archie saying something that Fred takes offense to...Fred jumping up out of Edith's chair flinging his arms out to his sides as was his trademark, and telling Archie that he's going to put 5 across his lips. All of this while Archie sits there in his chair in wide eyed amazement! Like I said, ENDLESS possibilities, and a classic for sure! Yeah, the Bunkers and the Sanfords lived on opposite sides of the country, but the writers could have made it happen somehow if they had wanted to.

It was just a thought that popped into my head this morning and I wanted to put it on here before I forgot about it. I can't believe that this story line never crossed the minds of the writers. Anybody know if it was ever considered, and if it was considered why it never happened? Thoughts?

No, that's not where i got my name, but the funny thing is...with all the inconsistencies on the show...Bummy Fensel was consistent (although only mentioned once, then seen once). After Archie mentions his childhood friend Bummy eating bugs in an early episode, we see him years later (albeit his wife was the future Mrs Barney Hefner)!

Now I'm faced with a decision. The same company is about to release the entire series run of Barney Miller, another show I loved. Do I buy it knowing that it's probably going to be replete with ads?

I probably will since there's no other source for this show, and lately I've taken to converting all my dvds to media files, and watching them on the television from an external hard drive.. That means I can edit out whatever I want, including opening and closing credits. I don't even have a DVD player hooked up anymore.
I see your point but, they never actually tell you where the class was. For example we know his plant was in Southern Manhattan, but we don't know where the class was.
I know, but it mentions in the ep that he is taking the subway to the class....so even if he had to pass his stop to do so, if time was so tight, why get off..walk home and then back to the subway and wait for another train...just for mere seconds?
