[Archie Bunker's Message Board] Re: Irene Lorenzo

"What happened to Frank Lorenzo?" Vincent Gardenia was an experienced stage and film actor. He didn't adjust well to the way TV shows were made. He grew impatient sitting around all week waiting to make an entrance, deliver a joke and out again. He asked to be written out. Because his role was so small, they intended to just have him be the unseen husband of Irene Lorenzo (Betty Garrett). To explain his absence, Irene said things like "Frank's on the road selling plumbing supplies." However, with all the laughs, the shows always ran a little longer than expected. Irene's explanations often ended up on the cutting room floor. Most people didn't miss Frank and it didn't become an issue until Irene starting getting chummy with Stretch Cunningham. After a couple nights out on the town, people started asking, "Isn't Irene a married women?" So the writers dropped the Irene and Stretch storyline. After a while the stories involving Irene were running out and in 1975 Betty Garrett left the show. As you must know, she went on to play Edna Babish on "Laverne & Shirley." She found a unique difference between the two shows. Both had her in a contract where she would be paid, regardless of whether she appeared on screen. Unlike "All in the Family," Tony Marshall, producer of "Laverne & Shirley" would have her pop in on every episode to earn her pay, if only to ask for the rent, or deliver a quick joke. On "All in the Family" she only appeared when it would move the plot along or provide grist for Archie's tirades

Just watch "Man on the Street", Season 2 , last night. This is the ep where Archie is going to be on TV giving his opinion's on Nixon's economic policy. But his TV breaks

They find a repairman, who happens to be an Orthodox Jew, and he won't fix the TV because it's after sundown on the day before the Sabbath. The repairman refuses to go against his religion and of course, Archie's mad. he says "Turning down business, that's against your religion!"

The Jewish Repairman replies to Archie's insult with an old Jewish saying in Hebrew? Yiddish? Well Archie says "What the hell is that supposed to mean?" The repair man replies "You'll never know but believe me, I got even."

In many ways, the expressions made AITF and were even funnier than some of the actual lines. My favorite was the time Archie and Edith were sitting in the waiting room at the hospital while Archie was getting ready to be admitted for his gall bladder surgery. He handed Edith a magazine to look at and it turned out to be Playgirl. The look on her face as she studied the nude centerfold was a classic not to mention the look on Archie's face as he watched her! Finally, in disgust, he rips it away from her and says, "Couldn't you find a cake recipe in there or something?" "Let me see!" she says, as she reaches back for the magazine. Later on, as the nurse is wheeling Archie away, he gets angry again when he spots Gloria looking at the same magazine. That whole sequence makes me laugh so hard even to this day!
