Just yesterday I was watching on youtube a 1999 interview with Joyce Randolph. She portrayed Trixie Norton on "The Honeymooners". She discussed how "The Flintstones" and "All in the Family" were kind of copycats of "The Honeymooners" or inspired by it. She recalled that Carroll O'Connor actually spoke to Jackie Gleason about the role, and kind of having Archie have some of Ralph Kramden in him, and Gleason gave him his blessing! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and good for Mr. Gleason to have recognized this. Lucille Ball on the other hand was positively dismayed that her beloved network could air such a program as "All in the Family".

It is one episode that I am unable to watch. For one, as I've mentioned before, Edith reminds me a lot of my own mother, and seeing that happen to her would be a lot like seeing that happen to my own mother.

I forget where I read this or perhaps saw this, but I believe Norman Lear said during the taping of this episode, they actually had to have guards standing in front of the audience, the fear being someone from the audience might run up and try to stop the actors from performing that scene. I can only imagine how uneasy that studio audience must have felt. That reminds me, I wonder if the ticket stubs said "18 or over to attend"? I also wonder if they were given any advance notice about the specific content of this episode?

I know the biggest beef about this episode, based on everybody else's posts, is that this was a re-tread of a storyline where Gloria was nearly raped. I guess the only argument I can give for this episode is, unlike Gloria's situation, this was one we actually were able to witness, making it that much more disturbing.

I do remember watching the first episode of "704 Hauser" and it just didn't feel right. I watched it from start to finish, but it just felt very odd. I was like "James Evans is re-incarnated?" The gal who played the girlfriend was a bit too annoying to me. The mother reminded me too much of Mrs. Huxtable. Seems they tried to make John Amos look like a black Archie Bunker, and Mr. Lear already did that with George Jefferson and Fred Sanford. It's not a surprise the show only lasted 6 episodes. I only watched the first one, and although the house looked somewhat the same, it was changed a lot, and it saddened me. Also, having Joey Stivic show up out of the blue to visit the old house seemed so totally forced and out of place. Other than seeing the updated house, which also was rather depressing to me, the show did nothing for me. Just reminded me that some things need to be preserved permanently.

It seems many of the shows from the early seasons were episodes that took place on Sundays (on the show, not necessarily the day that it aired). Archie, hard-working all week, seemed to want to just sit in his easy chair & watch the Jets play. Seems he never got the chance to, between trying to get Mike out of trouble, or Edith having relatives over, or Gloria having her liberal-minded friends visiting or having to drive for Reverend Fletcher (Felcher...whatevah...), thus missing out on going to a Jets game live, seems Archie was never able to enjoy football.

Another example was when the bar was robbed right after Super Bowl XII was played, between Dallas & Denver. At least he got to see the game, but still, another very sad or distressing event tied into football.

Even though the Bunker household didn't resemble my parents house at all, the set still makes me think about my parents home. I know that doesn't seem to make much sense, but my folks were very simple people, and didn't have a great many luxuries, so the simplicity of the Bunker household reminds me of my childhood home. I learned about football from my Dad, just enough so I could watch the game and understand it and it's been a passion of mine ever since.

Many classic TV shows remind me of the NFL. Most new seasons start in September, both for TV shows and the NFL. Mary Tyler Moore show reminds me of the old great OUTDOOR Minnesota Vikings, Archie reminds me of the Jets & Giants, Mork & Mindy reminded me of the Broncos (took place in Colorado).

There was one other time when Archie wanted to watch football highlights and Meathead wanted to watch a documentary about the environment with Jack Lemmon (I wonder if that was a real show?), and Archie "discussed it" with Meathead.

Meathead: "I want to watch the Jack Lemmon special about the environment."

Archie: "And I want to watch football highlights on Channel 2. Now, guess what's going to happen?"

[Archie Bunker's Message Board] 1978-79 season, most depressing...

Over the past couple of years I have purchased, or received as a gift, various seasons for "All in the Family". I had seasons 1-8 and I purchased season 9 recently. This was the first, and only, All in the Family season without Mike & Gloria as regulars in the cast.

That was the first very depressing thing, not having them on. Second, the fact that there was not a live studio audience any longer. Given the new dynamic of Archie & Edith serving as foster parents for Stephanie, it seemed the show didn't lend itself to live studio audiences any longer. Just seemed to add to the emptiness. The opening theme was changed and just was very annoying to me. Archie in a grandfatherly sweater, Edith rolling her eyes skyward at the start, the way they seemed to sing the opening much slower. The end theme song "Remembering You" was also altered and very badly. It had a very slow, depressed sound to it. The show was like an empty tea kettle sitting on a hot stove burner. The Aunt Rose episode is still creepy, and had a lot of foreshadowing about Edith's demise, as well as the final episode "Edith the Good".

The Bunker house just seemed so empty. It was also a very depressing time for me because I was only 11 at the time, and in July 1978, my father at age 43 suddenly died, right in front of my eyes. He was a very big fan of "All in the Family". So when that new season started, and he wasn't there watching it, it just seemed that much emptier to me. I guess knowing the eventual fate of Gloria & the Meathead, as well as Edith's death, all the season 9 episodes (except when they go to California at Christmas) seemed to have an eerie sort of emptiness somehow. Another thing too I noticed was Edith would talk much slower and more deliberate, and that actually was rather annoying. I guess the actors had to do that, since they were "flying blind" as it were, not knowing where the audience would laugh.

I did however, re-watch every episode of Season 9, painful as it was. I suppose the notion of Stephanie living with a foster parent served as the genesis for Diff'rent Strokes, which was also a classic, but one that ran a few years too long...

I wonder if the 704 was to imply how "patriotic" Archie was, as in July (7th month) and 04 (4th).

I wasn't an adolescent in the 1970s, rather I was still a child. In January 1971, the Baltimore Colts blundered their way to a Super Bowl title vs. the Dallas Cowboys, and All in the Family debuted. I had just turned 4 in December 1970 so have rather vague memories of the early episodes, but I remember my folks watching it quite often. My parents actually reminded me of a much watered-down version if Archie & Edith in fact, which is probably why I find myself feeling so comforted in watching these episodes especially on days like today Mother's Day.

Now I am in my mid 40s, and my parents are both deceased. Also, the 704 is a nice tie in because my parents wedding anniversary was on July 4th. That was an association I had not made until reading this post today, so I thank you all for this!

Yes, this is always something about which I wondered, and the inconsistencies others have mentioned here about the "Bunker" home.

Of course storyline continuity is a problem for film & TV, and sometimes a position is actually created on the staff of a film/TV show crew to work on such issues.
The actual show was shot on soundstages in Hollywood. It was never shot in NY and it was not an actual house but a set, hence why there was a porch in some of the episodes.

But I'm facinated by ALL the wall hangings and sculpture and such on the set. Notice the clock with no hands over the fridge? A calendar design dish towel hanging like my grandmother had. Various bird-themed dinner plates. A blue parrot is sometimes on the divider/ledge where the phone is. An etching of house with figure near the closet door. And hard-to-see trinkets along the back wall near the basement door -- they seem to move positions. Of course, their portable trays and horse head lamp shade. If I had time and talent, I'd make a CGI replica of the set you can move through-- complete with every set piece!

Hmm, I don't think those burglers were accusing Mike of "not being liberal enough". In fact they mocked his left-wing mindset, "You must be a LIB-ER-AL!!" Which to them is a lot of hypocracy from a bookish white boy trying to be on their side. And then they tried to set him straight on "real" ghetto life, a very funny bit. Their story's moral is (from their view) is that Liberals don't have a clue anymore than Conservatives do. Interesting to point out: at the end this episode, Archie reads the paper suggesting those two crooks were arrested. Which proves just 'cause you live in poverty doesn't mean you break in and steal stuff. Peace out.

This is interesting. I came up with a silly theory that it was one of two things. He wore his wedding ring on the 3rd finger while filming AITF out of respect to his wife and wedding vows. Not so silly? Or.....when married the ring was too big and he just never got it properly sized!! Haha!!!!
Oh, and the discussion here about this episode's "realism"? It's a situation comedy, not a docu-drama.
Yeah...but the thing that endeared this show and the characters to us so much, was the fact that they were "real", and not your typical cartoonish one-dimensional "sit-com world" characters. The show worked because in addition to providing great comedy, it got us emotionally involved; we didn't have to suspend belief when we watched it....because it took place in the real world, as opposed to the land of make-believe in which most sit-coms are set. This ep ruined that, which is why this is the only episode of the first 5 seasons that I skip over every time.

Funny thing is, usually with AITF, the opposite of this is true; usually they inject a little too much realism, like when they have eps about rape or death.....

I don't mean to pick on you.....but....really, when you think about it, the burglars were accusing Mike of not being liberal enough! (That's certainly a first- and kinda pictures our day, when 99.9% of whites would bend over backwards to do anything for a black beauty; and cringe at the notiuon of even remotely being accused of being "racist", and yet the blacks are still screaming "racism!" as loud as ever).

I know this is an old thread, but none of you shouting "Commie" mentioned the fact these two crooks were not just busting on Archie, but on Mike's left-wing, high-mindedness as well (which for AITF, is quite rare from anyone but Archie). Mike says to them, "He [Archie] doesn't understand what living in the ghetto can do to a man." "...And YOU DO??", was the response. Even Archie would agree (if he wasn't so terrified at that point!) that you can't view reality from a sociology class. Oh, and the discussion here about this episode's "realism"? "What's Happening"-man, now the first season or two of that, was GREAT!

Dwayne: "Hey, hey HEY!"

WH also had to be the show with the most number of stars who died of obesity, and in their 50's!
